Artist Spot - Nicole Jade Zehetner

Artist Spots are our way of shining a light on both current and former residents, presenting their OW project and where to find them. This month, the spotlight is on Nicole Jade Zehetner.

Artist spot of Nicole Zehetner

Nicole graduated from The Animation Workshop’s Character Animation program in 2021, where she focused on 3D animation. She excelled as lead animator and editor on a number of short films and started taking an interest in story-development. This culminated in the direction of her own graduation short film “Cloud Catcher”.

Post-graduation, Nicole’s career as a 3D animator flourished over two years, spanning commercials, feature films, shorts, and television—including her recent animation work on the Danish TV show Team Nuggets. These diverse projects have enriched Nicole’s expertise in animation production and propelled her into roles of supervision and leadership.

Nicole’s project in Filmværksted Viborg is entitled Theseus. It is a small but heartfelt space rock opera about alienation from a place that once was home. This narrative unfolds the tale of Theseus, a young extraterrestrial, and their twin, as they strive to mend their bond severed by distance after Theseus has left and undergone a dramatic transformation in their pursuit of music. Full of nostalgic sci-fi visuals and album cover aesthetics, this film embraces the universal language of music. Every aspect of the world, including dialogue, becomes an instrumental component.

“It's nice to be back! For one I've always been excited about the potential of 3D, and I'm excited to work with such a young and rapidly developing art form. Thematically the sincere pursuit of things that make us happy, despite its challenges, is something that has always stuck with me, even if it might sound cheesy. I think even with grand philosophical questions like the “Ship of Theseus's paradox”, are best seen through an intimate character struggle. I especially enjoy Scifi because you get to keep this character focus while still adding fantastical elements like shapeshifting aliens, (in case it wasn't obvious, I'm a huge Star Trek fan).”

While her time at Filmværksted Viborg has been mainly focused on scriptwriting, Nicole ventured into new territories, mastering software to craft captivating visuals assets and conducting style tests with the help of peer residents.

“When I arrived at OW, my project was still in its early development stages, so there was plenty of story work to tackle. However just as important was diving into Blender and other 3D programs. Coming from a pure animation background, but still wanting to direct a 3D movie, I wanted to familiarize myself with the different parts of the pipeline and learn to create assets and conduct style tests on my own. OW was the perfect playground to do this.”
